Uzbekistan Ziyarah Tourism Week 2020: Uzbekistan Accelerates Programs to Capitalize On The Growing Muslim Travel Market

Feb 2020

Ziyarah Tourism Week will be held from the 12th to the 16th March

Tashkent, 25th February 2020 – According to the Mastercard - CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index 2019 (GMTI 2019), the Muslim travel segment is one of the fastest-growing segments in the travel industry. The total travel expenditure is projected to exceed USD 300 Billion by 2026.  Uzbekistan with its rich heritage is set to capitalize on the growth of this segment.

To showcase Uzbekistan’s rich Islamic history and its impact on heritage, science, faith, and culture, the “Ziyarah Tourism Week” will be held from the 12th to the 16th March. The line-up of events comprises of the Ziyarah Tourism Forum, Islamic Heritage Conference, Halal in Travel Conference, Islamic Architecture and Art Conference, Modest Fashion Showcase, Halal Chef World and Islamic Finance Forum. They will be held in the famous cities of Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent with the theme of “Reconnecting Uzbekistan’s rich Islamic Heritage with the Muslim World.”

Uzbekistan is home to many important religious and historical sites and was the birthplace of renowned Muslim scholars & scientists such as Imam Al Bukhari, At Tirmizi, al-Beruni, al-Khwarizmi, Ibnu Sina and Bahauddin Naqshbandi. This brings opportunities for the development of “Ziyarah Tourism”, a term coined by Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the President of Uzbekistan, who has prioritized the sector as one of the keys to its economic development.

Ziyarah Tourism Week, Central Asia’s largest Halal lifestyle platform, will bring together prominent international and local industry experts, travel influencers, Islamic scholars and academicians to discuss and share strategies on enabling the growth of these segments in the region.

The events are jointly hosted by The State Committee for Tourism Development and Muslim Board of the Republic of Uzbekistan and  CrescentRating.

Aziz Abdukhakimov, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Chairman of the State Committee for Tourism Development said: “We believe that Ziyarah Tourism Week will serve as an impetus for the widespread popularization of Islamic legacy of Uzbekistan, further development of Muslim travel the infrastructure, establishment of partnerships between Muslim Travel stakeholders and the improvement of quality of services provided in the country.”

Fazal Bahardeen, CEO of Crescentrating & HalalTrip shared “It is time to showcase Uzbekistan's rich cultural heritage to the growing segment of Muslim travelers. This week-long event will not only help Uzbekistan to position itself as a choice destination for Muslims but also develop a blueprint for other destinations to follow suit and showcase their Islamic history and culture to the Muslim world. We are extremely excited to work closely with the government of Uzbekistan to make this event a must-visit annual event for stakeholders who are looking at the Muslim travel market”

In 2020, Uzbekistan is expected to further grow its visitor arrivals from 6.7 million last year. Being at the crossroads of the historical Silk Road and with land borders with 4 neighboring countries makes it possible for visitors to enjoy combined tours around the region.  For the past two years, Uzbekistan has been investing in building the necessary infrastructures and building hotels. It has also enabled visa-free entry for 86 countries and e-visa facilities for 50 other countries. For the second year in a row, Uzbekistan has been listed by Gallop among the top-5 safest countries in the world.
