Muslim visitor arrivals to Japan to reach 1 million by 2020

Aug 2014

According the latest figures released by CrescentRating, Muslim travelers to Japan is projected to more than triple by 2020. In 2013, it estimates 300,000 Muslims tourists visited Japan. This figure could reach 1,000,000 by 2020. Muslim visitor annual average growth rate from 2004 to 2013 was 7.2%. Year 2012 saw the highest growth of 47% followed by 29% in 2013. The next 7-year average annual growth rate is projected to be 18.7%, leading to 1,000,000 visitor arrivals in 2020. South East Asia will remain the key source market for Japan accounting for 65% to 70% of the total Muslim visitors. In 2013, the top three source markets were Indonesian, Malaysia and Singapore.

Presenting the latest findings at the Japan Halal Summit in Tokyo, Fazal Bahardeen, CEO of CrescentRating, attributed this to the increasing efforts by the Japanese travel industry to cater to the needs of Muslim travelers, in addition to opening up visa free travel for Indonesians and Malaysians. In order to continue on this growth path, he urged the Japanese businesses to ensure the integrity of the services they provide, especially Halal food.

“Even at 1,000,000 visitors, it will only represent around 5% of total visitors to Japan. Globally, the Muslim travel market will represent around 13.5% in 2020. As such, Japan still has huge potential to capture more visitors from this travel segment.” added Fazal

Mohammad Zubair, General Secretary of the Halal Development Foundation Japan, the organizer of the Japan Halal summit, said "This shows that the efforts to develop this segment by both the private sector and the government is already beginning to benefit the travel industry here. This will help Japan reach it’s target of 20 Million visitors in 2020”

More and more cities across Japan are developing services and facilities to attract this segment. Japan made the biggest improvement in CrescentRating’s 2014 Annual ranking of Muslim Friendly Holiday destination.

In CrescentRating’s recent survey, Australia, South Korea and Japan were the top three non-OIC destinations that South East Asian Muslim travelers were looking for travel packages. CrescentRating plans to work with local DMCs to launch accredited tour packages to Japan in the 4th quarter of 2014.
