Mr Kassim is the founder chairman of the well established Publicly listed Expolanka Group of Companies, reputed among the business community in Sri Lanka for its ethical standards. Incorporated in 1978, to handle fresh produce, Mr. Kassim through his dynamic leadership, has steered the group to its present status of over 50 companies with diverse business activities ranging from exports, imports, garments, waste management, entreport trading, airline agencies, freight forwarding, tours & travel, aviation etc., with a total annual turnover of over US$ 300 Million.
Mr Kassim, is also currently the founder Chairman of Amana Investments Limited & Amana Bank, which is Sri Lanka's first Islamic Bank. Amana Investments Limited also controls Amana Takaful Limited, which is Sri Lanka's first Takaful (Islamic Insurance) company. He has been a practitioner of Islamic Banking having been responsible for setting up the bank from scratch and counts over sixteen years of experience in this field, during which period he has interacted extensively with Islamic Bankers and international scholars.
He is also the chairman of Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT) Sri Lanka, set up in collaboration with APIIT Malaysia, to provide Bachelors and Masters Degree in Information Technology courses. He also sits on the Boards of various other companies.
