It is believed that the Great Blue Hole was formed thousands of years ago as a result of increase in the sea level that flooded the limestone caves and its roof collapsed resulting in this structure. The Great Blue Hole today is a popular diving destination, perfect to explore the underwater life. However the dive is not recommended for beginners.
The Great Blue Hole and the surrounding waters are home to the Caribbean Reef Shark, the Black tip Shark, nurse sharks, giant groupers and other aquatic life. Divers can also get lucky to spot bull shark and hammerheads. The diving trip to the Great Blue Hole is usually a full day trip and typically includes a dive in the Great Blue Hole and other dives in the surrounding reefs.
