A jewel of East Africa, Kenya is located along the Indian Ocean. Kenya is a beautiful country with dramatic landscapes, emerald waters, sandy beaches, spanning desert and striking snow-capped mountains too. Travellers to Kenya enjoy amazing adventure activities like bird watching, mountaineering, safaris and much more.

The Swahili Coast refers to the coastal area of East Africa inhabited by the Swahili speakers and includes the coasts of Kenya, Tanzania, south Somalia and north Mozambique. Ibn Battuta travelled along the Swahili Coast in 1331 and visited quite a number of cities like Mogadishu, Mombasa, Kilwa, etc.

 

 

The Horn of Africa is referred to the area of North-eastern Africa and at times also called as the Somali Peninsula. The area extends into the Arabian Sea and is located on the southern side of the Gulf of Aden. The countries in the region include Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Somalia is known for all the wrong reasons now and not a place to consider for your next holiday! However, when Ibn Batutta visited Somalia sometime in 1330, some of its' cities like Mogadishu and Zeila were some of the most thriving cities in Africa.

Hopefully we will be able to cover the Masaajid in more than 200 capital cities of the world in the next three months.

One of the premier natural ports in the world, Aden is located on the eastern shore of the Red Sea or Gulf of Aden. The ancient natural harbour of Aden lies in the crater of an extinct volcano, which is the site of the old city. This area now forms a peninsula that is joined by an isthmus to the mainland. Aden has several distinct areas including the crater, the old city and original port; Ma'alla the present day port; Tawahi called as "Streamer Point"; Khormaksar located on the isthmus.

 

A fascinating city, Sana'a is the capital of Yemen and still an undiscovered destination. The unique architecture and enthralling landscape are very inviting. Sana'a is listed among the cities that are regarded as the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the world along with Aleppo and Damascus.

Ta'izz enjoys a dramatic setting on the Yemeni Highlands close to the Mocha port on the Read Sea.Ta'izz is located at the base of the Sabir Mountains and has numerous ancient and beautiful sections with houses made of brown bricks and the masaajid featuring white exteriors.

With the current historic events in Egypt, it will need all the support it can get to establish its new beginning. At Crescentrating, while congratulating the people of Egypt, we would like to support Egypt by promoting it as a preferred travel destination for 2011.

Established in the 9th century, Zabid was a town of Islamic learning and was home to the famous University of Zabid. Zabid is also believed to be one of the oldest towns in Yemen. According some sources, it is the first town in Yemen to come into Islam in the lifetime of Prophet Muhammed (Sallallahu-alaihi-wasallam). Today the town stands as a World Heritage Site.
