A modern city with an excellent balance of contemporary facilities and greenery, Sunderland has seen a lot of development in the past few years. A former industrial town, Sunderland is located on the banks of River Wear along which are the National Glass Centre, the beautiful Stadium of Light and lavish apartments.

Sunderland is a metropolitan borough formed in 1974 and was granted the status of city in 1992. With the establishment of the University of Sunderland, the city has transformed into a hub for youngsters and boasts of a vibrant lifestyle.

The Sunderland Museum is one of the most visited museums in England. The museum houses artifacts from historic times till the present day. The museum opened in the year 2000 and has a picturesque Winter Garden with sub-tropical plants. The National Glass Center has several artifacts and glass-making facilities as well. The Monkwearmouth Station Museum displays the local history and transport in the city. Other museums worth visiting in Sunderland include the Ryhope Engines Museum, Sunderland Volunteer Life Brigade Museum and the North East Aircraft Museum.

The Hylton Castle is one of the oldest and most decorative buildings in the city. The city has a number of leisure centers where visitors can have a great time. The Mowbray Park is the oldest municipality park in the city and has restored its Victorian splendor. The Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope offers exciting winter sport activities. Towards the north of the city center travelers can have fun at the Roker and Seaburn beaches. The Roker beach is ideal for enjoying water sports.

Shopping in Sunderland can be quite exciting. The main shopping is focused around the Bridges Shopping Centre, which is home to over 100 high-end shops. Sunniside is another excellent place for visitors to shop and have fun. Specialties of the area include jewellery, glassware and ceramics.

There are a few masaajid in the city including a masjid in Milfield, the Sunderland Masjid on Western Hill and one functioning in the University of Sunderland. There are many Halal takeaways and restaurants in the city and most of these Halal restaurants serve South Asian cuisine. The Seaburn Strip also has some happening dining outlets and cafes. Visitors can relish delicious seafood in this area.

Taxis and the public bus are some of the best means of transport in the city. Boats also make a good means of transport but if you are in an adventurous mood then you can also opt to cycle around the city.
