Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art

Written by  Crescentrating

The V&A Museum in London has a large collection of ceramics, decorative art work and miniatures

The museum's main focus was on European art but it has also collected arts from Islamic countries. Since the 1950's the museum has dedicated a gallery entirely to the Islamic Middle East. This gallery was renovated and renamed to Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art in 2006. The room has been designed to evoke the true essence of Middle East.

The main feature of the gallery is the room-sized Ardabil carpet that was made in 1539 for the Safavid dynastic shrine in Ardabil. The carpet has been laid in the center of the gallery and is surrounded by 400 wonderful artifacts.

There are over 10,000 artifacts, mainly ceramics, glass, metalwares, ivories and textiles. Many of them are from Iran, Turkey and Egypt. The gallery also has some great texts that show artistic exchanges between the Islamic world and Europe.

The museum is open daily from 10.00 to 17.45.
