Big Ben refers to the hour bell of the clock placed at the northern end of the Palace of Westminster. However, the name is also used in extension to the clock or the clock tower as well. Big Ben is the largest four-faced ringing clock and also the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. Big Ben stands 320 foot high and looks stunning at night when the four clock faces are illuminated.
Big Ben is one of the most famous landmarks and was named after Benjamin Hall, the First Commissioner of Works. Another theory suggests that Big Ben is named after the heavyweight boxing champion of that time, Benjamin Caunt.
Even though Big Ben is one of the most visited attractions in London, the interior of the tower is not open for public. Residents of UK however can arrange for tours with the help of their Member of Parliament.
There are quite a number of Halal restaurants within easy reach of Big Ben. Most of these restaurants specialize in South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine.
