Buckingham Palace

One of the most majestic buildings in the world, Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the British monarch in London. The palace is also used to entertain guests on state, ceremonial and official occasions. The Buckingham Palace is located in the city of Westminster between Green Park, Hyde Park and St. James's Park.

The building originally was a huge townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham, and later was acquired by George III in 1761 as the private dwelling for Queen Charlotte. The palace was expanded in the 19th century to form three wings around the courtyard. It finally became the official royal palace of the British Monarch on the consent of Queen Victoria in 1837. The latest additions to the building were made in the late 19th and early 20th century which included the famous balcony and the East front.

The 19 state rooms, ballroom and the gardens are open for visitors during the months of August and September when the Queen is away to Balmoral. The state rooms have some of the most prized collections of the Royal family including paintings and exclusive French and English furniture. Visitors should also visit the extensive ballroom and the palace garden offering exclusive views of the West front.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony is something that should not be missed. This ceremony takes place every day at 11:30 in summers and every alternate day in winters. This takes place in the forecourt of the palace and lasts for about 45 minutes.

Sitting in front of the Palace is the golden statue of Queen Victoria. The Queen's Gallery is a permanent exhibition space showcasing items from the Royal Collection. The objects on display are rotated. Visitors can also see the Royal Mews that houses vehicles used by the Royal Family for weddings and coronations.

The nearest masaajid to the Buckingham Palace is the Mayfair Islamic Center and the Westminster Islamic Center. There are an array of Halal dining outlets and takeaways close to the Buckingham Palace. Travelers can expect to find South Asian, Tandoori and Halal fast food in the vicinity.
