Madinat Jumeirah, an Arabian Shopping and Dining Experience | by Nadia Masood

Who would have possibly thought that in the middle of a barren desert, a resort that reminds one of Venice could arise one day?

In Madinat Jumeirah, winding paths lead one through a traditional Arabian, bazaar-like atmosphere in which shops and intimate galleries spill onto the paved walkways. As one walks through the bazaar, the sounds of craftsmen and women at work combine with the aroma from street cafes and boutique restaurants transports one back in time. The souk or market at Madinat Jumeirah is a must-visit place when one is visiting the United Arab Emirates. Here, one will find:

  • 75 boutique shops
  • A mosque
  • 23 waterfront cafes and restaurants
  • Open plazas
  • Air conditioned walkways
  • 442-seat Madinat Theatre

This re-creation of a traditional souk is located within the Madinat Jumeirah Resort. One of the perks of shopping or dining at Souk Madinat Jumeirah is the view from its outdoor terraces of the Burj Al Arab hotel. However, it's the only market in Dubai where prices are fixed (and quite expensive) and bargaining is not the norm. The exterior of the complex re-creates traditional Arab architecture and features wind towers.

These, and numerous traditional lanterns hanging throughout the entire place makes Madinat Jumeirah a great place to take amazing photographs. A man-made canal has been built, where one can take an abra ride for 50 dirhams and sail through the resort. "It's just like riding a gondola in Venice!", I heard a tourist remark.
