The largest city and the biggest metropolis of South Africa, Johannesburg is a beautiful place to visit and enjoy a great time. The city also serves as the provincial capital of Gauteng, which is the richest province in South Africa.
Johannesburg has quite a number of Masaajid. There are many Muslimg residening in the areas of Crosby, Brixton and Mayfair. The main Masjid in the city is the Jumu'ah Masjid on the corner of the Kerk & Sauer Streets. The Jummah Salaath is held around 12:15PM; prayer facilities are available for women.
There are many Halal restaurants in Johannesburg; some of them are certified by, SANHA or other certifying bodies. Visitors can taste a variety of mixed flavors in the dishes.
There are several natural attractions too around Johannesburg. The Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens features several birds including the Black Eagle, which is an endangered species. The Constitution Hill is a fascinating place to visit; it houses a museum, art gallery and a part courtroom. The Johannesburg Zoo is an excellent attraction for people of all ages.
In the heart of Johannesburg visitors can find some Victorian and Edwardian architecture buildings. The city is famous for its art galleries and museums like the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Museum Africa, Mandela Family Museum, Apartheid Museum, Chérie De Villiers Gallery, Sci-Bono Discovery Center, Johannesburg Planetarium, Standard Bank Gallery, South African National Museum of Military History, James Hall Museum of Transport and the Origins Center - The South African Museum of Rock Art. The Market Theater Complex is the center for modern play writing.
Other places worth visiting close to Johannesburg include the South African Lipizzaners, Lesedi Cultural Village, Lion Park, Montecasino Bird Gardens, Gold Reef City, Ferreira's Mine and Workers Museum.
About 25km from Johannesburg is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cradle of Humankind. It is the site for the Sterkfontein fossil, which is the richest hominid site in the world. Around the area travelers can also visit the Magaliesburg and the Hartbeespoort Dam.
To witness the bohemian culture and lifestyle visit the suburbs of Melville, Newtown, Norwood, Parkhurst and Greenside.
Johannesburg is full of craft markets; the African Craft Market is the best place to shop for local handicrafts. Johannesburg also has a number of shopping malls including the Oriental Plaza, Sandton City, Northgate, Bedford Centre, Cresta Mall, Rosebank, Fourways Mall, etc.
Parts of Johannesburg are crime prone, as such visitors should take lot of care when travelling around the city
