The national capital, Belgrade is a wondrous place for visitors to explore. The old town area of the city has a few historical monuments like Belgrade Fortress which overlooks the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. The Kalemegdan Park is also worth a visit. The National Museum on the Republic Square is a good museum to visit. The Old Royal Palace is worth seeing; once the residence of the kings, the building now serves as the town hall. The White Palace and the New Palace are also great attractions to visit.
Visit the Ada Ciganlija, an island in the Sava River; the area has a number of cafes and restaurants to enjoy. Visitors can also have a fun swimming experience in the artificial lake in the center of the city. The "family-friendliness" of the swimming locations in Ada Ciganlija and the Halal certification status of the restaurants in the area have not been confirmed so please inquire from locals before planning your trip. Novi Sad is a beautiful city located by the Danube River and has numerous museums and art galleries representing the culture of the area. To the south of the city is the Fruska Gora hills which are good for hiking and bird watching.
Kragujevac is the second largest city in Serbia and also has numerous sites that will impress visitors. Lake Bubanj Park is a few minutes from the city center and is a good place to relax. The Kragujevac Aquarium is the first of its kind in Serbia and worth visiting. The city also has some good shopping streets and complexes.
Visit the city of Nis where you can see several Ottoman sights and the ruins of the Roman Town. The Turkish fortress and the Skull Tower are good sites to visit in the city. Take a ride on the Sargan Eight Railway at Mokra Gora; it is an hour-long journey that takes visitors to a height of 300m. The Djerdap National Park is an exotic place to visit; the Djerdap Gorge is the main attraction of the area. Some of the other national parks in Serbia include Sara, Tara, Fruska Gora and Kopaonik.
Serbia is a good place to buy Turkish coffee sets, laces, knitwear, embroidery and leatherwork. There are several designer shops in Belgrade where visitors can buy some exclusive clothing. The Kneza Mihailova Street in Belgrade has several shops. There are also quite a number of shopping malls in Belgrade and other major cities of the country.
Muslims form a small population in Serbia. There are very few masaajid in the country. The Bajrakli Masjid in Belgrade is the main masjid. There are a few Halal restaurants in Belgrade; one is close to the Bajrakali masjid. There are traditional Serbian delicacies that visitors should taste during their stay. Some of these include the Prebranac, Sarma, Gibanica, Kiflice and Pasulj. For Halal restaurants in the city, please check our Halal Restaurant listing. The best way of moving around Serbia is traveling by car. However, if you are visiting the country for the first time then bus is the recommended means. Car rentals are easily available in Belgrade.
