Kota Bharu overview

The Royal City and the state capital of Kelantan, Kota Bharu is a beautiful city located in the northeastern part of Malaysia close to the mouth of the Kelantan River. Travelers can enjoy some delicious food in the city. Kota Bharu is the main stop for those traveling to the Perhentian Islands.

Spotting a Masjid in Kota Bharu is not difficult. The Masjid Muhammadi in Downtown Kota Bharu is one of the main masaajid in the city. The other notable Masaajid include Masjid An-Naim and the Masjid Kubang Kerian. The Jummah Salaath is conducted around 1:00PM and the sermon is conducted in Malay. There are prayer rooms available for women in the Masaajid.

Kelantan State also has the first Chinese-style mosque in Malaysia. Known as the Beijing Mosque, it looks like the Masaajid in China and is located in Rantau Panjang, which is one of the duty free-zones in the State.

Halal food is easy to find in the city. There are a wide range of Halal restaurants in the city and travelers can taste some scrumptious Kelantanese food. Some of the main local delicacies include Ayam Percik, Tapai, Murtabak, Nasi Ulam and Keropok Lekor Losong.

Near the Independence Square in the city and the Istana Balai Besar (Royal Palace), there are several museums that travelers can visit. The Istana Balai Besar features impressive architecture. The Pasar Besar is also one of the main architectural delights. Close to it is a plain square where the night market or the Pasar Malam is held in the evenings.

Some of the famous museums in Kota Bharu include Muzium Negeri Kelantan, Muzium Kraftangan, Muzium Negeri, Memorial Peperangan Dunia Ke II, Muzium Islam, Muzium D'Raja and the Muzium Adat Istiadat DiRaja Kelantan.

Kota Bharu also has some wonderful beaches where travelers can enjoy some great fun. The PCB Beach and Irama Beach are the main places for travelers to flock. Other beaches are the Pantai Perkasa, Pantai Sungai Dua, Pantai Kandis. Visitors can also enjoy a 2-hours cruise along Sungai Galas to Dabong. The caves at Gua Ikan,Dabong are excellent for exploring.

Travelers can also enjoy some adventure at the Mount Stong State Park and the Stong Waterfall. There are other waterfalls within 2-3 hours of the city including the Lata Beringin Waterfalls and the Jelawang Waterfalls. Diving has become one of the latest adventure activities in the city.

The hand-printed Batik clothes in Kota Bharu are a must buy. There are a variety of choices available at the Kota Bharu Trade Center. Some of the other places to shop include Pasar Siti Khadijah, Ayam Percik the night market, KB Mall, Pantai Timur, Pelangi Mall, The Store, Kota Seri Mutiara, and Nirwana Maju.
