Johor Bahru overview
Written by CrescentratingJohor Bahru is the largest city in Johor and also the capital of this state in southern Malaysia.. A bustling city, Johor Bahru is also the industrial, economic and cultural center of southern Malaysia. Being close to Singapore it attracts many visitors from the Island.
The Sultan Abu Bakar Masjid in Johor Bahru is the state Masjid of Johor. The Masjid has a unique architecture inspired by, Victorian style. The Jummah sermon is delivered in Malay. Prayer rooms are available for females.
Johor Bahru has numerous Halal restaurants for travelers to dine. The common dishes in the city consist of mainly seafood and delicacies like laksa and mee rebus.
Visit the Sultan Abu Bakar Royal Palace Museum, located in the main building of the palace complex. The palace is still used for royal functions and ceremonies. The museum houses some of the most prized artifacts. The Sultan Ibrahim Building was built in 1940 and it housed the State Secretariat and Chief Minister's office until recently. The state Adminsitration is now moved to the new area of Nusajaya in Johor. The Dataran Bandaraya Johor Bahru is the city square that hosts a number of outdoor events.
The Johor Bahru Art Gallery is located in a 2-storey building constructed in 1910. Exhibits in the gallery include Malaysian modern paintings, Islamic calligraphy, ornate wooden window frames, weapons, traditional clothing, etc. The Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum displays the culture and history of the Chinese community is the city. Other notable landmarks in the city are War Memorial, Makam Diraja and Tanjung Kupang Memorial.
About 7km northwest of the Causeway is the waterfront development of Johor Bahru, the Danga Bay; visit the Danga World Theme Park, Danga World Petting Zoo and Rumah Limas in the area. The Taman Merdeka is a public park built around a huge lake and has open-air theaters, bridges and an independence monument. The Taman Rekreasi Hutan Bandar is a beautiful recreational park. Also visit attractions such as Johor Bahru Zoo, Saleng Zoo, Orchid Valley, Haji Ali House, Istana Garden, Mawar Complex and the Kraftangan Malaysia Cawangan Negeri Johor.
Travelers can enjoy a fun time at the Stulang Laut, Pulau Sibu PADI Dive Centre and the Dan's Nasty Frogmen Dive Base at Sea Gypsy Village on Pulau Sibu. Take a cruise up and down the Danga Bay.
Johor Bahru is filled with world-class shopping malls including City Square, Carrefour, Holiday Plaza, Plaza Kotaraya, Plaza Sentosa, AEON Bukit Indah, Danga City Mall, AEON Tebrau City, Festive Street Mall, Landmark IT Mall, Sutera Mall and the Jalan Segget Bazaar.
During the last couple of years, area in and around Johor Bahru has seen a lot of development; specially the area known as Nusajaya. Nusajaya is part of a major program to develop Southern Johor into a vibrant hub for leisure, business, industry, education etc. This part of Johor will see theme parks, water front activities, marinas in the near future.
