Langkawi overview
Written by CrescentratingAn archipelago of 99 islands located off the mainland coast of Malaysia in the Andaman Sea, Langkawi is also called as the Jewel of Kedah. These islands are a part of the state of Kedah. The largest and the most populous island among these is the Pulau Langkawi, which is also an administrative district of Kedah along with the town of Kuah
There are a number of well-maintained Masaajid in Langkawi located at convenient places for the comfort of visitors. The Al-Hana Masjid is the main Masjid in the area. The Jummah Salaath is conducted around 1:00PM and the sermon is delivered in Malay. Prayer facilities are also made available for women.
Langkawi is popular for Malay, Chinese, Thai and Indian cuisines. There are a number of Halal restaurants along the seaside promenade in the town of Kuah. Hainan chicken rice and char koay teow are some of the best local delicacies. Most of the Halal restaurants on the island are certified.
The beaches are the main appeal of Langkawi, the most famous is the Pantai Cenang. Other beaches are Pantai Tengah, Pantai Kok Tanjung Rhu Datai Bay, Pasir Tengkorak, Pantai Pasir Hitam and Burau Bay.
Apart from the beaches other places of interest include Crocodile Adventureland, Laman Padi Rice Garden, Legend Garden, Underwater World, Eagle Square, Oriental Village, Ibrahim Hussein Foundation Museum, Summer Palace and Galeria Perdana.
The Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls or Seven Wells is a lovely waterfall. There are two areas for viewing one at the base and one at the top of the waterfall where there are seven pools.
In the town of Kuah travelers can visit Lagenda Langkawi Dalam Taman, a 50-hectare folklore-themed park located along the Kuah waterfront. Also visit the Chogm Park and Gunung Raya, which is the highest peak in Langkawi. The Langkawi Crystal is the only glass-blowing works in Malaysia.
The Padang Matsirat is a serene area in Langkawi and houses a few attractions like the Field of Burnt Rice, Atma Alam Batik Art Village, Air Hangat Village, Langkawi Buffalo Park, Kota Mahsuri, Langkawi International Book Village, Mardi Agro Tech Park and the Snake Sanctuary.
Travelers can enjoy a variety of water sports and outdoor activities like island hopping, sailing, bird watching, jungle trekking, jet skiing, nature walks, eagle feeding, scuba diving and snorkeling. Also take a cable car ride to the top of Gunung Mat and cross the Sky bridge to enjoy stunning views of the islands.
Langkawi is a duty-free island and travelers can find some great deals on the island. Some of the places for shopping include Langkawi Parade Shopping Complex, The Zon Duty-Free Shopping Complex, Kompleks Budaya Kraf and the seaside promenade in Kuah.
