Kuching Overview

Kuching is the largest city and the capital of Sarawak in East Malaysia. A haven for travelers, located on the banks of the Sarawak River, Kuching is rich in history and culture and offers a great blend of modern buildings and historic monuments. The city is divided into two distinct areas by; the Sarawak River, the southern section is a commercial residential area predominantly Chinese whereas the northern end is Malay in character

The Kuching City Masjid is the main Masjid in the city. It is also known as the Sarawak State Mosque and was built in 1968. The Masjid is also one of the most prominent landmarks of the city. The Jummah Salaath is held between 1:00Pm and 2:00PM. The sermon is conducted in the local dialect and prayer facilities are available for women.

Travelers can enjoy a wide range of local delicacies in Kuching such as Sarawak Laksa, Kolok Mee, Manok Pansoh, Umai and Bubur Pedas. Finding a Halal restaurant is not difficult in the city. There are many Halal restaurants which are certified and travelers can make sure that they are eating Halal by checking the certificate.

Kuching is a great place for visitors to explore the traditional culture of the region. The Waterfront has been beautifully landscaped and has several stalls, restaurants and open-air theater. There is also a Chinese pavilion, musical fountains and an observation tower.

Around Chinatown in south Kuching travelers can visit the Main Bazaar, memorial to Rajah Charles Brooke, Supreme Court, Sarawak Museum, Fort Margherita and the Astana.

Travelers can also visit the Sultan Iskandar Planetarium, Kuching Civic Centre Medan Raya Complex, Taman Budaya, Friendship Garden and the Sarawak State Library.

There are a number of museums too in Kuching such as Dewan Tun Abdul Razak, Sarawak Islamic Museum, Chinese History Museum, Cat Museum Sarawak Textile Museum, Sarawak Timber Museum and the Pua Kumbu Museum. The Fort Margherita has been converted into the Police Museum.

The Kubah National Park is located 20km west of Kuching and is an excellent place to visit. The Semeggoh Orang-Utan Sanctuaryis 32km from the city and also attracts several visitors.

Shopping is Kuching is elaborate; the Main Bazaar is where travelers can find tribal handicrafts and souvenirs. The Sunday Market too offers some great deals. On the western end of Jalan India are two other local markets. Kuching also has some shopping centers like The Spring, Boulevard Mall, Sarawak Plaza, Green Heights Mall, Wisma Saberkas, Crown Square, Riverside Shopping Complex, Hock Lee Center and Wisma Satok.
