Putrajaya City Overview
Written by Irshard BoosoNestled in the lap of nature about 25 miles south from Kuala Lumpur is the planned city of Putrajaya. The seat of government was shifted from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya in 1999 even though Kuala Lumpur still is the national capital. Almost 70 percent of Putrajaya is still nature. For a Muslim tourist to Putrajaya there are several things to see and explore. Housing attractions and great looking buildings, Putrajaya is a great outing for the whole family.
The Putra Mosque is the main Masjid in the city; the other Masjid is the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque or the Iron Mosque. With a 116-meter minaret, Putra Mosque is a beautiful mosque and one of the best in the region. While it has kept the traditional Islamic architecture, the designers have used local ideas and material to blend in very nicely. Overall architecture is derived from Persian Safavid period. It can accommodate up to 10,000.
Putrajaya has some very nice restaurants that make it easier for the Muslim traveler to enjoy the stay in this picturesque location. Most food outlets here are Halal. The city is conveniently connected by, highways and bridges, which makes it easy for the visitors to travel to different parts of the city.
There is lush greenery and botanical gardens spread all over the city with the beauty being enhanced by water bodies and wetlands. There are five confluences that meet at the northern part of the city and it forms the main waterway that flows through the city. The Putra Bridge is a three tiered bridge located in the heart of the city with the design being inspired by, Islamic architecture.
The Taman Botani botanical garden located in Putrajaya is the biggest botanical garden in Malaysia. The Putrajaya wetland is one of the first man made wetlands in the country and also a popular tourist destination.
Another great tourist destination is the Istana Kehakiman or the Palace of Justice. Putrajaya also has the Agricultural Heritage Park, which houses more than 170 species of plants and different species of trees.
Perdana Putra Complex, the building which houses the Prime Minister's Office, is a great piece of architecture incoparating elements from Indian Mogul period.
Visitors would enjoy taking a cruise on the Putrajaya Lake, which is situated in the heart of the city. You can also visit the Millennium Monument, Putrajaya Independence Square, Melawati National Palace and the Putrajaya Landmark or Mercu Tanda.
Dataran Putra's is a 300 meter diameter centrepiece which connects all the main landmarks of Putrajaya is as good as any other famous “squares” in the world.
Visitors can shop for traditional goods at the Souq Bazaar in Putrajaya. The area has small shops all over the street that sell everything right from traditional Malaysian clothes to food and accessories. The Alamanda Putrajaya shopping center is the first shopping center of Putrajaya and is a shopper’s paradise. The shopping center has excellent facilities ranging from shops that sell clothes, accessories to restaurants and entertainment.
