Penang Overview

This wonderful state in Malaysia is situated on the northwest coast of the Malaysian Peninsula and is one of the top tourist destinations in Asia. Penang is the second smallest state in the country with the capital of the state being George Town.
Halal food is available all around and visitors can enjoy several types of Halal cuisine. Long Beach, Gurney Drive and Little India area are some of the places where you could find for Halal food easily and worth a walk. Nasi Kandar, Indian Muslim food, is something not to be missed. Not all food outlets of course Halal. Most Malay and Indian ones are generally Halal. If they do not display a Malaysia Halal Logo then it is better to ask if the food served is Halal. Some establishments will be very obviously Muslim eateries, with large Arabic Islamic inscriptions.
There are a number of mosques in the state, some of which include the Penang State Mosque, the Kapitan Kling Mosque and the Acheen Street Mosque. Penang State mosque is worth a visit.
Most of the historic architecture in Penang is centered in George Town. Penang offers an excellent mix of different sights, cultures, buildings and some excellent shopping. Most of the times tourists prefer to take a walk through George Town to enjoy it better.
Some of the main attractions within the city of George Town are the Penang Museum and Art Gallery, which was built in 1821 and houses several historical relics; the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is one of the Chinese-type dwelling; a perfect example of the 18th and 19th century architecture located outside China. The City Hall Esplanade hosts several exhibitions.
Some other places worth visiting include Fort Cornwallis, Clock Tower, Komtar Complex and tomb of Caliph Syed Shahul Hamid.
Outside the city of George Town there are several other places to visit in Penang some of which include University of Science Malaysia's (USM) Museum and Art Gallery in Minden, Forestry Museum in Teluk Bahang and the Penang Bridge that links Penang to the mainland and is the longest bridge in Asia. Tourists can also visit the hills of Balik Pulau around which is the spice garden; the Butterfly Farm in Teluk Bahang also sees a lot of visitors. The War Museum is another interesting place that one might like to visit.
The Penang Hill, which is made up of a series of hills namely the Western Hill, Strawberry Hill, Tiger Hill, etc; attracts a number of visitors during the weekends because of the cooler weather.
Some of the natural attractions include the Bukit Mertajam Recreational Forest that has several camping and picnic spots and adventure lovers can enjoy some jungle trekking. The Bukit Panchor Recreational Forest is a perfect family destination located about 50kms from George Town. The Penang National Park along Pantai Acheh has some wonderful jungle trails and the old lighthouse to stop by. For nature lovers the Mengkuang Dam and the Penang Bird Park is a must see.
For travelers interested in shopping there are a number of interesting places to shop. The main shopping areas of Penang are around Jalan Penang, Lebuh Kapitan Kling, Lebuh Pantai, Lebuh Campbell and Lebuh Chulia. In George Town the Little India and Chinatown markets is where tourists can get some local buys.
There are also some excellent malls in the city like the Komtar Mall, Prangin Mall, and the Gurney Plaza Mall. The area of Gama is the oldest supermarket in George Town. The Island Plaza in Tanjung Tokong near Batu Ferringhi is also an important shopping center. All over the island tourists can find some marvelous Chinese embroidery and Malaysian handicrafts.
Penang is also famous for its beaches. If you are looking for beach activities then Tanjung Bunga or Batu Ferringhi are the places to visit. Places like Batu Ferringhi offer wide range of activities for the water sports enthusiast.
