The largest Mosque in South East Asia, Istiqlal Mosque, was built to commemorate the independence of Indonesia from Dutch rule. "Istiqlal" means "Independence" in Arabic.  The construction started in 1961 and was completed in 1978. The Masjid can accomodate a congregation of 120,000 people. The interior of the Masjid is kept very simple.
