Cirebon overview

A lovely city in West Java of Indonesia, Cirebon is an interesting place for travelers to visit. The name Cirebon is derived from ‘Kota Udang' meaning the City of Shrimps. Cirebon is the main harbor city of Java.

 

Islam has a prominent presence in the city and it can be seen in the architecture of the buildings in the city. The Masjid Agung or the Big Masjid is the main Masjid in Cirebon. The Jummah Salaath is held around 12:00PM.

Some of the local delicacies in Cirebon include Nasi Lengko, Empal Gentong, Nasi Jamblang and Tahu Gejrot. There are a number of Halal restaurants where travelers can dine in Cirebon.

The two most famous places to visit in Cirebon are the Kraton Kasepuhan, the residence of the Sultan of Cirebon, and Kraton Kanoman, another palace, which was built later but is quite grand. The ceremonial wall in the palace is still used for special occasions. The woodcarvings on the pillars of the palaces are beautiful. The palace gardens too are very impressive.

The other two palaces worth visiting include Kraton Kacirebonan and Kraton Keprabonan. The Royal Chariot is one of the main appeals for travelers. The Port of Cirebon was originally established by; the Dutch in 1865 and there are a number of cruises that leave from this port. The old sugar mill in the city is also worth a visit.

The city is also the burial place of Sunan Gunung Jati, one of the Nine Saints of Wali Songo who set foot for spreading Islam. Also visit the village of Trusmi, which is about 5km from Cirebon and is known for batik production. Plangon is known for its habitat of monkeys.
