Surabaya City Overview

The second largest city of Indonesia and the capital of the province of East Java; Surabaya is situated on the northern shore of eastern Java at the opening of the Mas River along the edge of the Madura Strait. Today Surabaya is one of the busiest ports of the area.

There are a number of Masaajid all around Surabaya. The biggest Masjid in the city is the Al-Akbar Masjid. It is also one of the biggest Masaajid in Southeast Asia. Cheng Hoo Masjid in Surabaya is the oldest in Indonesia and was the first Masjid to be built in the country. The Jummah Salaath is held between 12:15PM and 1:15PM. The sermon is conducted in the local language and there are prayer facilities for females.

Surabaya has a number of Halal restaurants where travelers can try out several local delicacies like sate kelopo and rujak cingur. Some of the Halal restaurants in the city are certified by MUI.

Some of the best attractions in Surabaya that travelers should not miss include the Mpu Tantular Museum, Surabaya Harbor, the People's Amusement Park, Tugu Pahiawan Monument & Museum of Sepuluh Nopember and the Surabaya's Zoological Garden. The zoological garden is home to some of rare reptiles and animals.

The Jembatan Merah is an area with old houses dating back to the 1940s. These houses are in contrast to the buildings in the modern Surabaya. Visit the House of Sampoerna in Jembatan Merah. Close to Jembatan Merah is the Chinatown, where travelers can have some fun time at the Kya-Kya Kembang Jepun street bazaar, which comes to life at night.

Other places to visit in the city include Monumen Jalasveva Jayamahe on the seafront, Monumen Kapal Selam a submarine display, Pasar Ampel an Arab market for carpets, Suramadu Bridge connecting the city to the island of Madura and the Tugu Pahlawan monument dedicated to the heroes of Surabaya. Ria Kenjeran Coast (water park), The Park Of Ria Kenjeran Beach And The Jurang Kuping Camp are also excellent places to enjoy.

The Ciputra Waterpark is a great place to enjoy with the entire family. The Balai Pemuda is an art center in the heart of the city close to the City Hall. There are also a number of golf courses in the city where you can enjoy a great time.

Surabaya has some of the largest shopping malls of Southeast Asia. Some of the best deals in the city are available between 1st May and 30th June. The Pasar Pabean area has maximum number of shopping malls. Well-known centers in the city include World Trade Center (WTC), HI-TECH Mall, Plasa Marina, Tunjungan Electronic Center (TEC) and the Empire Palace. Other malls include the Tunjungan Plaza, Mal Galaxy, Grand City Mall, Ciputra World Mall, Royal Plaza, BG Junction, Kapas Krampung Plaza and Pusat Grosir Surabaya.
