Yogyakarta City Overview

The Indonesian province of Yogyakarta is known for its ancient relics and the colonial heritage of the capital city, which is also called Yogyakarta city. Located on the island of Java, this lovely region apart from offering historical sights, museums and monuments also has a lively art and cultural heritage, golf courses, volcanic mountains and exciting shopping opportunities. The region has a humid tropical climate. Yogyakarta is an old Islamic sultanate that was formed in the 1700's.

There are a number of Masaajid in Yogyakarta, one of the main being the Yogyakarta Grand Mosque. Finding Halal food in the province is not difficult. Most of the restaurants serve Halal food. Finding your way through the city is pretty easy. You can also see the area in the trishaws called becak or the horse carts called as andong.

One of the main historical sights includes the Sultan's palace complex, known as Kraton Ngayogyakarta in the city of Yogyakarta. The complex has a Masjid and also a museum. The other attractions in the area include the Dutch fort of Vredeburg, the old capital of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom, the royal palace of Ratu Boko, and Kotagede.

There are two important museums in the city of Yogyakarta, the Yogya Kembali, and Fort Vredeburg; visitors can also find a large air-force museum in the eastern part of the city.

The Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu are some interesting natural attractions that one can visit. These are volcanic mountains that attract vistors who love nature and adventure. Adventure lovers will love rafting down the Elo River.

Visitors to this region, can also visit the Water Castle (Taman Sari), the Ngasem Bird Market and the Silverwork at Kotagede. About 75 miles to the north of the city of Yogyakarta is the coastline where you can enjoy a range of water sports and a lot of family fun.

As for shopping, visitors, can enjoy shopping at the Marlioborough Mall where you can find fashion accessories. The Pasar Beringharjo sells traditional Indonesian goods. The Mirota Batik, Mirota Jogja and the commercial district of Jalan Malioboro offers great shopping experience.
