Guyana Museums

Travelers visiting Guyana should not miss the museums in the region. These museums not only give details about the history of the region but also make the visitors aware about the heritage and culture of Guyana. There are several museums especially around Georgetown that interest travelers. All these museums can be visited easily and the entry to most of these museums is free.

The Guyana Museum is situated on North Road in Georgetown and was opened in 1951. The collections of the museum were previously saved in the Carneige Building. The museum houses rare collections of precious stones, archaeological findings, flora and fauna and examples of Amerindian arts and crafts. It is the largest museum in Guyana and has most of the general artifacts of the region. The Museum is open from 9:00hrs to 16:30hrs, 9:00hrs- 12:00hrs (On the third Saturday every month it is open till 14:30hrs).

The Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology situated on the Main Street in North Cummingsburg, Georgetown is the first museum of anthropology in the English-speaking Caribbean. It was founded in 1974 and has collections of Dr. Denis Williams the Guyanese Archaeologist. The museum also has ethnographic collection from Wai Wai an indigenous tribe of Guyana. The museum collections also showcase excavated artifacts from the administrative regions of Guyana. The museum is open to public Mon thru Thursday 8:00hrs to 16:30hrs and on Friday 8:00hrs to 15:30hrs.

The Castellani House is the home to the National Gallery of Art in Guyana. Located on Vlissengen Road & Homestretch Avenue in Georgetown it is a large wooden building that was designed by, Cesar Castellani. The building has been home to some prime figures of the republic like Director of Agriculture in 1888, official residence of Prime Minister of British Guiana in 1965 and finally was inaugurated as the Art Gallery in 1993. The Castellani House is open Monday to Friday from 10:00hrs to 17:00hrs and on Saturday from 14:00hrs- 18:00hrs.

Within the Headquarters of Guyana Police on Eve Leary Compound in Georgetown is the John Campbell Police Museum. Visitors to this museum can find uniforms, photographs, musical instruments, and other police relics dating back to colonial times. The museum remain open from Mondays to Fridays 08:00- 12:00hrs and 13:00hrs to 16:00hrs.

The Museum of African Heritage at Bel Air Park, Georgetown was founded in 1985 and houses collections of African Art. Visitors can find West African relics here, wooden masks and carved doors. The museum preserves the African history in the area and also has a library and educational trust. The museum is open from Monday to Thursday 8:00hrs to 16:30hrs and Fridays 8:00hrs- 15:30hrs.

Travelers can find themselves close to several Masaajids like the Queenstown Jama Masjid on Church Road, New Mosque in St Alexander Village. A few Halal restaurants can also be found around these museums.
