The museum has artifacts covering over 13 centuries and aims at showcasing the role of Islam in the Mediterranean, and the links created with the Greco-Roman traditions and with the Byzantine Empire.The initial collection of the museum was of wood carvings, metal works, textiles, glass and ceramics. The collection was later enhanced through gifts and donations.
The first gallery of the museum has artifacts from the early Islamic period. Among these, the glistening ceramics from Egypt and Iraq are worth seeing. The inscribed textiles, metalwork, jewelry, and wood carvings from Yemen and Egypt are also beautiful.
The second gallery focuses on exhibits from the 12th to the 16th centuries with inlaid metalwork.
The third gallery has an inlaid marble from a Cairo mansion of the 17th century. The room has contemporary windows with colored glass and also textiles and ceramics from the Ottoman period that present the essence of cosmopolitan Mediterranean of the 16th and 17th centuries.
The fourth and final gallery has been dedicated to art work from the 19th century Iran and Mughal India.
The museum is open from Thursday to Saturday and Tuesday from 9:00 - 15:00 and on Wednesday from 9:00 to 21:00. The museum remains closed on Mondays.
