Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

Appreciators of art will definitely fall in love with the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

A subsidiary of the Smithsonian Institution, this museum is housed in a cylindrical building and houses one of the best collections of international modern and contemporary artwork. The museum was opened in 1974 and is named after Joseph H. Hirshhorn, who donated over 6,000 sculptures and paintings to the museum.Today the museum has a collection of 12,000 pieces of modern art from the late-19th century to the mid-20th century.

At the Plaza Level of the museum, is a museum store filled with assorted souvenirs, art books, posters and artist-designed jewelry items. There is also a kids' corner at this level that has toys, puzzles and interesting books.

The lower level of the museum has a theater that has work from some of the premier filmmakers from around the world. The second level has works from various artists that are circulated every four months. The third level has apermanent exhibition from the artwork donated by Hirshhorn and includes work done by artists such as Alexander Calder and Ellsworth Kelly.

The surrounding of the Hirshhorn Museum is adorned by the Sculpture Garden and showcases exclusive modern sculptures by artists such as Henri Matisse, David Smith and Louise Nevelson. During the winters, the water fountain in the garden is turned into an ice rink and a few visitors can get lucky to skate around these sculptures.

The opening hours for the Hirshhorn Museum are from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, the Sculpture Gardenis open from 7:30 AM to dusk and the Plaza Level is open from 7:30 AM till 5:30 PM. Visitors can find a few good halal restaurants within easy reach of the National Mall.
