Sri Lanka Must Tap Into Lucrative 'Halal' Tourism Market: Expert

Sri Lanka's travel and tourism can reap the benefits of a burgeoning halal conscious consumer segment, primarily middle eastern travelers who are growing in volume and account for a higher percentage of travel spend, said an industry expert.

"No matter what business you are in be it food, travel or leisure it's a huge segment that you cannot possibly avoid," said Fazal Bahardeen, chief executive at Crescentratings, a travel industry body which rates hotels based on facilities provided to the Muslim market segment.

"What we have seen in the last year or two is the same halal consciousness we saw in the food, investment and banking industry is now being felt in the lifestyle industry," he said.
