Insha Allah we will keep adding other Airports. Please drop us an email if you know similar info of any airport or if any of the info above is not correct.
Indira Gandhi International Airport
Indira Gandhi International airport is located in southwest Delhi and named after Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India. Currently there are 5 main terminals.
Terminal 1, or the Palam Terminal, handles domestic flights with 4 sub-terminals: 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D. Terminal 2 handles all international operations at the airport.
After recent renovations, the entire terminal has been repainted, windows replaced, floor refitted with tiles, walls and ceilings remodeled, and new baggage belts, more business lounges, eateries and duty free shops added.
Terminals 3 and 4 are the Hajj Terminal and the Cargo Terminal. Muslims can use the Hajj Terminal between the months of October and December. All airlines bound for the Middle East are moved to this separate terminal to accommodate the large number of additional travelers during the Hajj.
The Indira Gandhi International is home to several Indian airlines including Indian Airlines, SpiceJet, Air India Regional and IndiGo Airlines, whereas Air India and Jet Airways use the airport as their second hub. Approximately 60 airlines serve this airport and transport travelers around the world as well as within India.
Prayer Rooms
There are no prayer rooms inside any of the existing terminals; however, once the new terminal opens in 2010, a prayer room will be available for worshipers. Until then, travelers will need to commute outside the airport to the nearest masjid, located near NH8 Highway, in the vicinity of Aps Colony 11.5 kilometers away from the airport (35 minutes drive).
Halal Dining
Indira Gandhi International Airport has a reasonable number of coffee shops and restaurants in the arrivals and departure halls, however, travelers should verify whether the food is Halal or not. On the other hand, travelers staying longer at New Delhi can take a small trip outside the airport to get a wide range of Halal meals.
Shopping & Entertaintment
There are duty-free shops in both the Arrivals and Departures lounges. The Terminal 2 transit lounge has duty-free and specialty shops that offer handicrafts, garments, electronic goods and more. In addition, a well-stocked chemist shop is located at the departure area in Terminal 2 to provide medicines to passengers. Travelers must keep in mind that payment, however, is accepted in foreign currency only.
Internet kiosks are provided at different locations throughout the airport and can be operated through credit card. Wi-Fi internet access is available in the Security Hold Area of Terminal 2. Clients interested in this facility should contact the Airtel counter for details.
Transport
Transport from the airport has been simplified by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) running its buses regularly between the domestic and international terminals of the Indira Gandhi International to the Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT). DIAL also provides a complimentary shuttle bus service every 20 minutes between the domestic terminals and every 30 minutes between the domestic and international terminals of the airport.
In addition, EATS (Ex Service Men Airlink Transport Service) provides a bus service from the airport to ISBT near Kashmiri Gate. Those in a hurry can hire the services of EasyCabs, the largest city taxi service in New Delhi. There are 250 radio cabs fully equipped with the state-of-art technology to give international standard transport to travelers in Delhi. Clients will be billed per kilometer from the point of pick up till the drop off point.
Car hire is available outside the Customs Halls at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. AVIS offers a variety of chauffer-driven cars, vans and 4 wheel drive vehicles, whereas the Delhi Tourism Development Corporation (DTTDC) has cars for hire (both AC and non AC) for Delhi and Inter State transfers at government approved rates.
New Delhi Airport Metro Express is under construction and is planned to be functional at the end of September 2010. It will connect the multi routed New Delhi Railway station to the Airport covering the six metro stations which would be known as city airport terminals.
Money Changers
In the International Terminal, banks, ICICI Bank cashpoints and a Bureau de Change are open 24 hours and in the domestic terminal from 6am to 8pm. Travelers should be cautious with their money and exchange currencies from these authorized banks only and be sure to obtain official receipts.
Other Amenities
There are 9 retiring rooms in the Domestic Terminal (Terminal 1) and two rooms in the International Terminal (Terminal 2). Dormitory facilities are also available at both terminals and children below 12 years of age are allowed without any extra charge.
However, passengers staying longer can book a room at the only hotel at the airport, the Centaur Hotel. The hotel is a luxury 3 storey hotel with 376 rooms and located close to the domestic and international airport terminals and adjacent to the National Highway 8 to Jaipur.
Mothers traveling with children can also enjoy the ease provided by the airport in the infant lobby of each terminal, where children are provided with toys, baby cots and a female attendant to monitor their activities. Nursing mothers can easily feed their infants in the lobby in privacy.
Moreover, for communicating outside the airport, STD/ISD/PCO booths are available at various points in the airport, plus a postal facility in each terminal to send telegrams, fax messages, STD calls, post cards, registered letters and speed posts.
