Prayer rooms at Colombo Airport and Karachi Airport

Written by  Fazal Bahardeen

Afew weeks ago I was travelling to Karachi to attend the first Global Halal Congress. Since I was taking Sri Lankan airline I had to transit through Colombo. At the Colombo Airport, I went to the familiar prayer room that I knew from my previous travels to Colombo. To my surprise, the room was closed. On inquiring from the officer there, I was told that it had been moved to a new location at the other corner of the 1st floor. There I was pleasantly surprised to find a much bigger and well kept room for males and I assume the female prayer room which was next to it was as big and clean.

Although there is no wudu place next to this prayer room, the washrooms, which are a few meters away, are wudu friendly.

The prayer facilities at Colombo Airport still may not be to the standard of what some of the airports such as Singapore & Hong Kong offers, but to my surprise it was definitely much better than what Karachi had to offer.

At the Karachi Airport while waiting to catch my flight to Singapore via Colombo, I was looking for the prayer room. All I found was an area in one part of the Transit lounge spread with prayer mats and with some partitions separating the female prayer area. It definitely looks like an afterthought in providing prayer facilities at the Airport.

Although the washroom which was a few meters away from the this "prayer place" is wudu friendly, the whole setup is not comparable to what other Airports in Muslim majority countries offer for Muslim travelers.

It could be that this was a temporary arrangement while the proper prayer rooms are renovated/constructed. But if it is not, then we need to compare Karachi with the facilities that are available in places like Jakarta, Doha, KL and similar Airports. On that comparison Karachi has lot more to do.
