Located in the northeastern Andes region is the department of Santander.

Santander is placed between the northeastern mountain range and the Magdalena river valley. The region has gained a lot of popularity in the recent years all owed to the numerous adventure sports that can be enjoyed in the area.

 The Santander region is one of the most stunning regions of Colombia. With plains, rivers, canyons, mountain and caves, visitors can enjoy a wonderful experience. The Santander region is broadly divided into two regions the Magdalena river valley area and the eastern mountain range area. The main attraction of the Santander region is the Canon de Chicamocha. A cable car about 6.3Km long runs across the canyon.

The capital of the Santander region, Bucaramanga is a bustling center that boasts of beautiful parks and tree lined streets. Contrasting the modern look of Bucaramanga is the town of Barichara that reminds visitors of Spanish colonies.

For adventure lovers, Santander offers a number of opportunities to enjoy adventure sports. The Caverna del Yeso and Cueva de la Vaca in Curiti; Cueva del Indio, Cueva Antigua and Hoyo de los Pájaros are wonderful to explore. The waterfalls and the canyons of Chicamocha, Juan Curi and Pinchote allow numerous activities. Santander is also a great place for hang-gliders to have fun. If you are a fan of rafting, then the San Gil River is a great place for you to enjoy rafting in the fastest river of Colombia.

There is an Islamic association in Bucaramanga, the Asociacion Benefica Islamica. Finding halal restaurants around the area is difficult. However, you can find some good fish dishes and vegetarian options around the area.

Santander is conveniently connected by public transport system. However, having a car rental with an experienced driver is a bonus. He can show you around the area and take you to the best places in Santander.
