The Old Providence Mac Bean Lagoon Nature Park is a wonderful site for nature tourism because of the wonderful natural beauty and the diversity of marine and land ecosystems that can be explored around the area. The park was created in 1996 and is sectioned into two parts, the Cayo Cangrejo (Crab Cay) and los Tres Hermanos (The three brothers). Submerged in the waters of the park are the barrier reefs that protect the coast of the Providencia Island from the waves. The park consists of 90 hectares of land and 905 hectares of sea. The land area of the park includes a small hill, the Iron Wood Hill.
Visitors to the Old Providence Mac Bean Lagoon Nature Park can enjoy a variety of activities such as hiking, snorkeling, diving, kayaking and some great beach fun. The park is open for visitors till 5:00PM. Visitors can also enjoy climbing the Iron Wood Hill. From the peak, you can enjoy unmatched views of Providencia, Santa Catalina and the barrier reef. The main sights worth visiting in the nature park include the Mac Bean Laguna and the two cays. The mangrove area is one of the best preserved areas of the island and you can enjoy a walk through the mangrove trails till the Mac Bean Laguna.
There is a Masjid in San Andres, the Islamic Center of San Andres Island. The Masjid holds all prayers including the jummah salaat. Availability of halal restaurants in the surroundings of the Old Providence Mac Bean Lagoon Nature Park is not confirmed. However, visitors can easily find delicious seafood and vegetarian options.
Visiting the Old Providence Mac Bean Lagoon Nature Park allows visitors to be close to nature. The park can easily be accessed by boat from the Providencia Island. It can also be accessed by air from Bogota. The local airport on the Providencia Island is connected by flights to the San Andres Airport. A boat ride from San Andres can take up to two and a half hours.
