There is a very small population of Muslims in Thimphu and there is no Masjid in the city. Finding halal food in the city is also difficult. It is better for visitors to try out vegetarian food options during their stay in Bhutan.

The Tashichho Dzong is the religious and administrative center of the country. The center houses the government ministries and the Throne Room of the King. The center is also home to the largest monastery of the country. The city has two interesting museums, the Textile Museum and the Folk Heritage Museum. The Textile Museum houses a gorgeous display of garments that have been worn by the Bhutanese from the 1600s till the present day. On the other hand, the Folk Heritage Museum explores traditional Bhutanese home and gives details about the lifestyle of the rural folk.

If you are looking for some natural beauty, then Thimphu has some very beautiful parks and gardens. The Takin Preserve, located at a short distance from the city center is a great place to visit. Located close to the city stadium and on the banks of the river is the Coronation Park. About 10Km from the city, set along the lush hillside is the Botanical Garden. The garden is home to several indigenous plants and trees.

Shopping in Thimphu is a colorful event. Regular markets are held on Saturdays and Sundays which are an excellent source of buying local clothes and jewelry. Hand-woven items and handicrafts are good souvenirs to buy. The main street of Thimphu has some exclusive shops where you can shop for some good items.

The city of Thimphu is easy to explore on foot. Most of the main attractions of the city are in the town center and can easily be reached on foot. It is also a good way of imbibing the culture of the city. If you are looking to travel around Thimphu, then it is better to opt for buses. Taxis are also a good means of traveling around the city
