The capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Urumqi is one of the most inland cities in the world. The city is the industrial and cultural center of a petroleum-rich region close to the Kazakh border. The city is located in a green zone facing the Tian Shan (Heavenly Mountains) on the northern side and is surrounded by large grasslands, snow-capped mountains and desert basins. For travelers the city is full of surprises.

CLIMATE
The average annual temperature is 14–15 °C (57–59 °F). The temperature declines with proximity to the mountains, averaging 4–5 °C (39–41 °F) at an altitude of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft), and 1–2 °C (34–36 °F) at 3,000 meters (9,800 ft).
LANGUAGES SPOKEN
Azerbaijani is the official language.
English and Russian are used in education and communication.
Lezgian, Talysh, Avar, Georgian, Budukh, Juhuri, Khinalug, Kryts, Rutul, Tsakhur, Tat, and Udi are all spoken by minorities.
