Introduction to Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan has been home to several strong empires, namely the Parthians, the Seljuks and the Khans of Khoresm. The area was first influenced by Islam in the 7th century AD. Popular for its fine carpets and horses, Turkmenistan is a part of Central Asia and preserves the nomadic culture of the country. Many of the present day cities in Turkmenistan were a major stopover along the Silk Road.The most modern and the most developed city in Turkmenistan is Ashgabat.
There are several settlements around Ashgabat that have been inhabited since the Bronze Ages. Within the city is the tallest freestanding flagpole in the world, the Ashgabat flagpole. The city is home to some interesting museums that house artifacts dating to the Bronze Ages.
