GEOGRAPHY

Mali is a landlocked country situated on the west of Africa. It borders Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania. At about 1.2 million square kilometers, Mali is comparable in size to South Africa.

DEMOGRAPHY

A population of close to 14.5 Million. Muslims account for about 90% of the population.

CLIMATE

Tropical and arid. Most of the country receives a negligible rainfall which may last for about 4-5 months. Temperatures generally range from 16 °C to 39 °C. April is the hottest month.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN

French is the official language. Bambara is widely used as well.

Introduction to Mali

Mali Flag In 1352 Ibn Battuta set out with a caravan to visit Marrakech, Sala and Sijilmasa before he visited Mali. Traveling for 25 days after leaving Sijilmasa, Ibn Battuta reached Taghaza from where he crossed the dangerous stretch of the Sahara Desert to reach the capital city of Mali. He stayed there for over eight months.

Mali features vast deserts and several colorful markets. The well-documented history of the country helps travelers get an in-sight into the African civilization.

The Dogon Country is equally interesting to explore. Consisting of several villages sitting on plateaus and in sandy lowlands, visitors can witness the traditional culture closely.
