Kollam (Kerala, India) Overview

Kollam also known as Quilon or Kawlam is a major business center and is located in the Travancore region of the Indian state of Kerala. The city is an old seaport and is located on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake.

Kollam is the fourth largest city of Kerala and serves as the southern gateway to the Backwaters of Kerala. The Kollam Port is the second largest port in Kerala. The city is home to a number of educational institutes. The city has quite a number of masaajid including the Valiyapalli Masjid, Chinnakada Juma Masjid, Juma-'Ath Palli Masjid, Kalamala Palli Masjid and the Makani Masjid.

 

Alumkadavu is about 26Km from the city and a scenic place with backwaters and Ayurvedic massage spas. Thangassery about 5Km from Kollam has a light house and remains of a Portuguese and Dutch Fort. The Thevalli Palace on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake is a stunning attraction for travellers to visit.

Kollam has a number of places to shop and several shopping malls too. Visitors can shop for jewelry, handicrafts and handloom. The city also has a number of branded shops for travellers to shop.

Halal food can be found in the city, especially around the masaajid in the city. It is best to enquire with locals about halal restaurants in the city. Chicken and fish curry along with rice is relished across the region.

Ibn Batutta visited the city in the 14th century.
