The Providence Stadium

The Twenty20 World Cup 2010 is being hosted in West Indies and Guyana is one of the main centers that, is all set to host 6 group stage matches, including 2 matches involving the West Indies for the Twenty20 World Cup 2010. The Providence Stadium in Guyana is situated in Providence, about 9Km south of the capital of Guyana, Georgetown. The stadium is located on the east bank of the Demerara River and is at a ten minutes drive from the city center of Georgetown and 30 minutes from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.

The stadium was built in 2006 especially for hosting the Super Eight matches for the 2007 World Cup at a cost of about $30 million. The stadium though built especially for cricket matches can also be converted into a multi-use facility. Formerly known as the Guyana National Stadium, the Providence Stadium has a seating capacity of 15,000. The stadium is one of the largest sports arenas in the country and also hosts test cricket matches that were earlier held at Bourda. The complex includes facilities like luxury apartments and also a shopping mall.

The nearest Masjid from the Providence Stadium would be the Queenstown Jama Masjid and Halal food can be found around the Masjid area. There is also the New Mosque at the First St. Alexander Village.

Guyana Halal food guide

The Muslim population of Guyana accounts to around 10% percent. Hence the scope for Halal market is also significant. Guyana has a few Halal restaurants. However, it is important that before eating, the authenticity of Halal food and services should be confirmed.

The food in Guyana reflects a marvelous range of cuisines from all over the world. Travellers can find a delicious range of Indian curries right from mutton, chicken, fish and prawns. From the African origins come dishes like foo-foo and metamgee or dumplings made of corn flour, yams, eddews, cassava and plantains, which is cooked in coconut milk and grated coconut. Chinese food can also be found at some restaurants in Georgetown.

However it is important that before dining it should be confirmed whether the restaurant serves alcohol or pork, as there are many outlets that serve partial Halal menus but also serve alcohol.

It has been a challenge to find out the exact list of restaurants serving Halal food in Guyana. Below are some of them. Please let us know if  you find more information about other Halal restaurants.

Hack's Halal Food: 5 Commerce Street, Georgetown, Demerara-Mahaica
They have a complete Halal menu and do not serve alcohol. They provide Indian cuisine, the owners of the restaurant are Muslims and they confirm that the food provided is Halal.

The Roti Hut: Albert Street and North Road, Georgetown, Demerara-Mahaica
They serve a complete Halal menu and do not serve any alcohol. It is a multi-cuisine restaurant and owners claim that the food served is Halal.

Madina Halal Restaurant: 143 Zeeburg W.C.D. Zeeburg, Guyana.
It is at a 30 minutes drive from Georgetown. he menu is varied and visitors can treat themselves to some delicious food. They do not serve alcoholic drinks in the restaurant and the full menu is Halal.

Halal Snackette: New Amsterdam, Guyana
They have a full Halal menu and also provide catering services. The owners are Muslims and claim to provide Halal home cooked food.

Botanical Gardens Guyana

Guyana is known for its natural beauty and a visit to the region would be incomplete without seeing the rich flora and fauna of the country. One of the best places where visitors to Guyana can have a closer look at the wildlife of the region is the Botanical Gardens and the Guyana Zoological Park. Travelers can find some of the most rare flora in the Botanical gardens and also more than 100 species of wildlife at the Guyana Zoological Park.

The Botanical Gardens is one of the most popular recreational parks in Georgetown. In 1877 the government invested $72,000 for establishing the Gardens and in 1878 the first gardener came to Guyana who took 35 years to landscape this wonderful Botanical Garden. Visitors can find lovely collection of both water plants as well as those growing on land. The Botanical Garden also houses the finest collection of palms, lilies and tropical flowers. Visitors can see a large collection of lotus and the Victoria Regia Lily, which is the national flower of Guyana and was first discovered in the Berbice River.

Guyana Museums

Travelers visiting Guyana should not miss the museums in the region. These museums not only give details about the history of the region but also make the visitors aware about the heritage and culture of Guyana. There are several museums especially around Georgetown that interest travelers. All these museums can be visited easily and the entry to most of these museums is free.

The Guyana Museum is situated on North Road in Georgetown and was opened in 1951. The collections of the museum were previously saved in the Carneige Building. The museum houses rare collections of precious stones, archaeological findings, flora and fauna and examples of Amerindian arts and crafts. It is the largest museum in Guyana and has most of the general artifacts of the region. The Museum is open from 9:00hrs to 16:30hrs, 9:00hrs- 12:00hrs (On the third Saturday every month it is open till 14:30hrs).

The Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology situated on the Main Street in North Cummingsburg, Georgetown is the first museum of anthropology in the English-speaking Caribbean. It was founded in 1974 and has collections of Dr. Denis Williams the Guyanese Archaeologist. The museum also has ethnographic collection from Wai Wai an indigenous tribe of Guyana. The museum collections also showcase excavated artifacts from the administrative regions of Guyana. The museum is open to public Mon thru Thursday 8:00hrs to 16:30hrs and on Friday 8:00hrs to 15:30hrs.
